I have been wanting to try making my own gyoza or dumplings for so long and they were super fun to make and I had heaps left over so I froze them and now I have a backup dinner/lunch/snack for a lazy day. I have been eating vegetarian for the last few weeks and its fun to try and mix things up and have some interesting dinners. You can customise the fillings to your own preferences and I was also thinking it would be super fun to plan a dinner party with friends where everyone can make dinner together!
Ingredients -
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- 1 heaped tsp minced ginger
- 1 heaped tsp mined garlic
- 2 packets (approximately 500g) frozen spinach, thawed
- 1 can bamboo shoots, finely chopped
- 2 tbs tamari soy sauce (and extra for dipping)
- 1 heaped tsp sambal
- 1 heaped tbs sesame oil
- Approximately 40 gyoza wrappers
Method -
- In a wok heat sesame oil and add onion, carrot, garlic and ginger.
- Cook until they start to go transparent.
- Add the spinach, bamboo shoots and sauces.
- Stir fry for 5 minutes or so.
- Take a wrapper, add a heaped tbs of mixture, add water to the edges, fold in half and press in little folds along the top. Repeat...and keep repeating...
- In a bamboo steamer or other steam basket, line with baking paper and then steam gyoza for 10 minutes per batch.
These are packed full of vegies and so so tasty. While I do enjoy the traditional cabbage filling I really love the taste of spinach in the filling. Spinach is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants. As well as this it is a good source of vitamins A, B2, C and K, as well as manganese, magnesium, iron, folate, potassium and calcium.
Enjoy!
